Author Virginia Smith's BIG Contest

Yesterday I posted about how you can enter to win "Bluegrass Peril" by author Virginia Smith at author Lena Nelson Dooley's blog (see that post). And today Virginia emailed me about a contest (a SUPERB one, btw) that she herself is running on her website. And this is something you do NOT want to miss. So read on.

Win a $500 Shopping Spree!

No, I'm not kidding and neither is Virginia.

One lucky person will receive a $500 Visa gift card to celebrate the launch of 'Stuck in the Middle', the first book in her new Sister-to-Sister Series.

In, Stuck in the Middle, Joan Sanderson wants to impress the good-looking doctor who lives next door. The problem is that her little sister, perky pretty Tori, is also taken with the guy. Before she knows it Joan is engaged in an all-out war to snag the guy's attention. Big sister Allie takes sides and drags Joan on a shopping spree to dress her in designer clothes.

Then in one of my favorite scenes, Allie gives Joan a lesson in "How to Flirt" using tips she learns on the Internet. Trust me, that scene is sure to bring a smile to your face!

But that's not all! Five additional winners will receive all three books in the Sister-to-Sister Series as soon as they are released, a prize valued at more than $40.

The contest runs from February 1, 2008 through 8:00 p.m. Eastern on March 31, 2008. But according to Virginia, people can actually enter now.

All I ask is that you tell her that "abookblogger @ gmail . com" (without the spaces) referred you to her contest. Please, pretty please!

Without further ado, go there and enter.

Children's Book Review - The Little Prince

The Little Prince and His Magic Wand
by Jillian M. Curtis (Author),
Janet Mattison-Prise (Illustrator)

Book Description
This is the story of a Little Prince whose kingdom was near the Forest of Magic, Mystery. Although he was going to be the King of a land, all the Little Prince wants is to be a great wizard. He’s told by the magicians in his court to go into the Forest of Magic, Mystery, and Miracles and seek the Great Wizard.

Off goes the Little Prince on his quest during which he comes across the Spirit of the Forest who, during her own quest for the Knight of Serenity, has become entangled in some thorns. He helps out the poor, exhausted creature and listens with the utmost compassion to her tale of woe. His sincere longing to help her helps him perform magic - the very same magic that has eluded him for so long and which was inside of him all this while.

Review
The best of fairy tales always have a quest in them, whether it is for treasure, a beautiful princess or in this case, for magic. The Little Prince in this story is just like the rest of mankind – he’s not contented with what he has (and what he has is the future ruling of an entire kingdom which is pretty awesome) and seeks that which is out of his reach. He wants magic so he can perform miracles. So far it looks like he’s just out to get some glory.

He goes to the Forest to seek out the Great Wizard’s help to fulfill his ambition. On the way he helps out a suffering creature and he does this without the least bit of selfishness. In fact he uses his royal scepter to cut away the thorns trapping the angel and uses his starry cloak to light their way. This is where things begin to change. The Little Prince not only helps release the Spirit, but in doing so, helps release the magic that was inside of him all along. All he needed was to realize that magic is there to help people and he was able to perform it.

This is a beautiful story which encourages children (and adults as well!) to be good, to be unselfish, to have compassion and help out those in need. It also encourages them to never give up and work towards their goals. And that it all lies within them. They just have to work to find it. And the story of the Little Prince does all this without being the least preachy. In fact, it’s real fun to read! This is the true magic of this charming tale.

The lovely illustrations in the book make the story come alive and also help personalize the characters.

The way the story ends leaves me hoping there will be sequel out soon.

(As always, check out "A Bookworm Reads" for my book reviews and only book reviews)

Children's Book Review - Goodnight Sleep Tight

Goodnight Sleep Tight (Kids Play)
by DK Publishing

Book Details - Slipcased | 7.24 x 7.24in | 8 pages | ISBN 9780756630935 | 17 Sep 2007 | Kids Play | 0 - 2 years
Price - $11.99
Language- English

“Goodnight Sleep Tight” is a beautiful soft cloth book containing high-quality appliqués on almost all pages (which are resistant to a curious child’s fingers - I can tell you that from personal experience). A farm animal is depicted on contrasting pastel yellow and blue pages and on each animal, appliqués have been skillfully used to give textures to parts of the animals – a snout in one, ears in another etc. They also encourage a child to touch and explore.

On the front and back covers, golden glittering threads make up a Moon and small stars that show up brightly on the contrasting lavender/purple-colored covers. They’re just bright enough to catch even a toddler’s wandering attention. And once again, these don’t come off, not even when you pluck at them with your fingernail (and believe me, I tried J).

There’s also a simple story contained therein, easy for any child to follow and parent to recite, with simple rhymes to go with each page/animal. It begins when a little barking puppy is advised to “bark no more” as “little goat sleeps on the floor” and so on. The soft and easy rhymes also make it easy to sing the book to your little one. The overall effect is very soothing and pleasant and will, hopefully, encourage the protesting little one to emulate the example of the little animals and fall asleep.

The soft cloth, the gentle rhyme and attractive appliqués make this an enduring and cherished addition to any nursery. This cushiony book also makes for an excellent gift seeing as it comes in its own protective poly-bag along with a header card.

On a side note
It's a cloth book, as such endures quite a bit of chewing, throwing, etc. Not sure if it's washable - at least I haven't tried it yet. Probably not. However, the stitching is good enough to withstand a toddler who's learned to tear paper pages and attempted the same with this one. But, no luck!

In Short
Kiddo and I both enjoyed it thoroughly.

Children's Book Review : Furry Friends

Reading level : Baby-Preschool
Board book : 20 pages
Price : $6.99 U.S/$8.50 CAN
Size : 6 x 6

Book Description
In this Paw Pals board book, little ones will read along as adorable kittens and pups frolic, sleep, and explore the world around them. The heartwarming photographs are presented alongside sweet rhyming text that captures the strong bond of friendship between cuddly animals, big and small. Acclaimed photographer Rachael Hale uses her lens, her love of animals, and a great deal of patience, to create an enchanting perspective on friendship between kitties and puppies.

About the Author
Rachael Hale has won numerous awards for her animal portraiture. Since 1995 her images have been published on calendars, posters, greeting cards, and stationery in more than 20 countries worldwide. She lives and works in Auckland, New Zealand, with her three cats, Edmund, Gianni, and Versace.

Review
Kiddo and I fell in love with this adorable board book the instant we first sat down to read it. The cover photo is that of two very cute little puppies and from the instant Kiddo first set his eyes on them, he wouldn't stop cooing and stroking them. The smooth surface of the cover and the glossy feel of the inside pages, all appealed to my little one's fingers. The soft pastel colors are ideally suited for the accompanying photos, which are all of little cats and dogs, captured at their adorable best by the skilled hands and lens of photographer, Rachael Hale. The photos are accompanied by silly rhymes that come out sounding so sweet when sung/murmured to a little kid.

Speaking as the adult who actually read this board book, I have to say I was equally if not more beguiled than Kiddo by the puppies and kittens dressed up as bunnies or lying fast asleep on their teddy bears (this was over-the-top adorable, BTW), snoozing on a hammock or appearing out of shopping bags/tea cups.

We've read this board book many times since I got it for review, but Kiddo continues to be fascinated with it and every time I bring it out, a huge smile lights up his toothless face and he reaches out with eager hands for it.

On a side note
The thick pages of this board book make for ideal chewing and Kiddo can testify to that :) Good thing is, the board book hasn't yet been destroyed and the glossy finish of the pages means I can easily wipe the drool right off.

In Short
A hit! with both parent and child.
